What types of wood does the charcoal contain?

Pure Charcoal consists of a mix of sustainably produced FSC-certified European oak wood, beech wood, and hornbeam. A conscious choice where each wood type has its characteristic properties. Beechwood is a softer wood type and ignites quickly. Oak wood and hornbeam are harder wood types. How is charcoal made?

To explain why Pure Charcoal is such a sustainable and responsible choice, we first briefly outline the general charcoal production process. Charcoal is wood charred in an oxygen-poor environment by heat. This decomposition process is called pyrolysis. Pyrolysis causes wood at high temperatures to break down into gases, liquids, and a dry residue (carbon). During this process, unwanted gases are released, some of which remain in the final charcoal. For example, charcoal smoke contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as tar, and particulate matter. But thanks to the special production process of Pure Charcoal, unwanted substances are extracted in an advanced manner, without entering the atmosphere. The result? A very pure, smoke-free charcoal, without tar, and with 62% less nitrogen and 82% less particulate matter (PM10 and smaller) emissions compared to most types of charcoal. These results have been confirmed by Dr.-Ing. Mohammad Aleysa, project leader of the Working Group on the Energetic Use of Biomass at the Fraunhofer Institute Stuttgart, who with his team conducted extensive research on charcoal.

Years of research

To realize this innovative charcoal, years of research preceded. The pyrolysis takes place in patented Retort ovens. This does not mean that every charcoal produced in these or similar ovens has the same quality properties. For Pure Charcoal, each type of wood undergoes its own process, where moisture and then unwanted gases and particulate matter are extracted. Depending on the type of wood, this process lasts 8 to 20 hours, working at different temperatures. This is crucial to extract as many gases and particulate matter from the wood as possible and to achieve the highest possible percentage of carbon. Because these substances are extracted during the process, a major additional benefit is that fewer PAHs are released during EGGen when, for example, fat, marinade, or other moisture drips onto the charcoal. Only after pyrolysis is the mix of charcoal compiled.

Better environment

The unwanted substances are not released into the atmosphere in this special way of production. They are stored and recycled, including as raw material for the production of plastic and road construction.
